Senior Managing Director / North America

Thomas McCarthy

Tom is the Senior Managing Director of Heitman's North American Private Real Estate Equity group and an equity owner of the firm. He is a member of the company's Portfolio Committee, which is responsible for reviewing and approving all strategic investment and operating decisions for all commingled and separate accounts. Tom also sits on Heitman's Executive Committee, Board of Managers, Management Committee, North American Private Equity Investment Committee and Private Equity Valuation Committee. He is Portfolio Manager for the funds in the Heitman Value Partners series. Tom began his career with Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young) before joining the portfolio management group of JMB Institutional Realty in 1984. After the 1994 merger of JMB and Heitman, he became a senior member of the portfolio management group. Tom received a BB from Western Illinois University and is a CPA.

Lewis Ingall

Lewis is Senior Managing Director of Heitman's Client Service & Marketing Group and an equity owner of the firm. In addition, he is a co-Portfolio Manager of Heitman Value Partners. He started his career at Lehman Brothers, Inc. as a member of the corporate finance department, concentrating on mergers and acquisitions and real estate capital markets. In 1988, he joined the acquisitions group of JMB Realty as an associate. After the 1994 merger of JMB and Heitman, Lewis became a senior member of the firm's combined investment group working on the origination, underwriting and execution of transactions. During his acquisitions tenure, Lewis was involved in the investment of over $3.5 billion and supervised the firm's team of analysts. In 2001, Lewis was named to lead a newly formed client service and marketing group for all of Heitman's activities. He is a member of Heitman's Executive Committee, Board of Managers, Management Committee and North American Private Equity Investment Committee. Lewis received a BA in economics, history and government from Wesleyan University and an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. Among other professional affiliations, Lewis is a member of the Pension Real Estate Association, Urban Land Institute, AFIRE and the International Council of Shopping Centers. He is a member of the Board of Directors of The Erikson Institute, a university conferring advanced degrees in the field of early childhood development.

Managing Director / Head of Global Research

Mary is Heitman’s Managing Director, Head of Global Research and an equity owner of the firm. She is the author of numerous articles and research studies relating to real estate markets, portfolio management and strategy. Mary is a member of Heitman's Board of Managers, Management Committee, Private Equity and Debt Investment Committees and Private Equity Valuation Committee. Prior to joining Heitman, she was an urban planner for the City of Chicago and she worked in retail site location. Mary received an AB from Vassar College and an MA and PhD from Northwestern University. Among other professional affiliations, she served two terms as a member of the board of the Pension Real Estate Association and was its president. She is currently in her first term as a member of the board of the Urban Land Institute. Mary is also a former president of the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries. She was named a fellow of the Homer Hoyt Institute in 2000, is a docent for the Chicago Architecture Foundation and is a member of the board of the Metropolitan Planning Council of Chicago.

Chief Executive Officer

Maury Tognarelli

Maury is the Chief Executive Officer of Heitman and an equity owner of the firm. His responsibilities include day-to-day management of the firm's operations and its investment activity. He is a member of the firm's Board of Managers, and chairs the Private Equity and Debt Investment Committees. Maury started his career at Heitman as an investment analyst in the firm's North American private equity group. In 1994, Maury assumed responsibility for the firm's private equity and debt investment groups, and subsequently was made a member of the firm's Management, Investment and Executive Committees. In 1999, Maury was named President and Chief Operating Officer of Heitman; in 2002, he became the firm's Chief Executive Officer. Maury received a BS in real estate finance from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. He is a member of the Real Estate Roundtable and Pension Real Estate Association.

Managing Director / Real Estate Debt

Steve is a Senior Managing Director and Co-Head of Heitman's Real Estate Debt group and an equity owner of the firm. He is also a member of Heitman's Management Committee and Debt Investment Committee. Steve manages a team that structures, originates, and services senior and mezzanine debt opportunities across all real estate sectors. He is Co-Portfolio Manager for two large debt separate account investment programs totaling more than $1 billion in investable capital. Prior to joining Heitman, Steve served as executive vice president and regional manager at U.S. Bancorp. While employed by U.S. Bancorp and one other publicly traded national banking association, he gained experience in debt work-outs and restructurings, structured financing, front-line relationship management and executive management of a large and profitable business unit. His experience includes construction and leasing of office and industrial properties during his time at a commercial development firm. Steve received a BS in Construction Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MBA in Finance from the University of Minnesota. He is a member of the National Association of Industrial & Office Properties, the National Association of Real Estate Investment Managers and the International Council of Shopping Centers. He is also on the Advisory Board of the James A. Graaskamp Center for Real Estate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business, and he is a frequent participant in industry-related panels and conferences.

Gregory Leadholm

Greg is a Senior Managing Director and Co-Head of Heitman’s Real Estate Debt group and an equity owner of the firm. He is also a member of Heitman’s Management Committee and Debt Investment Committee. Greg manages a team which structures, originates and services senior and mezzanine debt opportunities across all real estate sectors. He is Co-Portfolio Manager for two large debt separate account investment programs totaling more than $1 billion in investable capital. Greg has extensive structured debt experience including origination, loan structuring and negotiating, asset underwriting, risk assessment and portfolio management. He has built two start-up organizations focused on originating and managing structured debt and mezzanine loans. Prior to joining Heitman, he served in management roles with several large institutional real estate lenders and investors including Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of America, U.S. Bancorp and GMAC Business Capital. Greg received a BA with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute and the International Council of Shopping Centers, and he is a frequent participant in industry-related panels and conferences.

Jerry Claeys III

Jerry is the Non-Executive Chairman of Heitman and an equity owner of the firm. He is also a member of the firm's Management Committee and Private Equity and Debt Investment Committees. He started his career at White, Weld & Company as a member of the corporate finance department, concentrating in real estate finance and raising capital for developers, operating companies and the early REITs. In 1978, he became co-head of acquisitions for JMB Realty. Jerry was named Chairman of JMB Institutional in 1990. In 1994, JMB Institutional Realty merged with Heitman and he became head of the advisory business of the newly formed investment advisory entity. In 1999, he was named Chairman and CEO of Heitman. Jerry received a BSBA from Georgetown University and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame. He is a member of Pension Real Estate Association and served a six-year term as a member of its Board.
